Spring Report - Our Favorite Crazy Season
Last week saw us in our t-shirts and some on the crew wondering where the sun block had gone to. The next day fresh snow had crept down Sumas Mt., and it rained so hard that we scurried to the lunch station for an early break, and eventually relocated the crew to the relative protection of the potting shed. Each night, we put spun bond covers over the tomato, bean, and sweet corn starts in the greenhouse - yes, inside the greenhouse, because previous injurious experiences have taught us that mid spring can pitch a grower some very sudden and chilly nights. Spring keeps us guessing as it keeps us jumping.
Thanks to all of you who have purchased Garden or Market Shares with us for 2010. Your early season purchase has fueled a flurry of activity at Cedarville Farm: purchases of new equipment (we love our new field cultivation tool, the Perfecta II!), seeds, fertilizers, and labor in the form of a dedicated and good-hearted crew. Our first seeds were sown into plug trays in the hot house in mid January and by mid March we were setting out our first transplants of the year. We’ve planted about 1/3 of our 5 available acres and expect another third to be filled up within the next two weeks.
We expect our early season harvest will start strongly, with a full selection of salad and cooking greens, radishes, salad turnips, garlic greens, pea vines, and other tender items. Not far behind, broccoli, cauliflower, broccoli raab, snap and snow peas, and cabbage are rapidly maturing for the second “wave” of the spring harvest. Our tomato, pepper, basil, and cucumber starts are stout and ready to go into the ground; we fight back visions of tomato & basil sandwiches whenever we brush past these plants in the greenhouse. Promising a crop of a complimentary sort, our new batch of laying hens has progressed through the ugly teen-ager stage and are now fully feathered, stream-lined pullets. Their first “fruit” should appear by late July.
We still have shares in both seasons available and would love to introduce new folks to our fresh and delicious food. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions about our farm or CSA programs.
Today’s weather forecast: busy with periods of inspired chaos!
Our CSA harvest will focus on providing you a wide variety of crops, both in terms of categories (carrots, lettuce, tomatoes, etc) and in terms of distinct varieties within these categories (over 12 varieties of tomatoes, 15 types of salad greens, 6 varieties of beans, and such like). These same crops will be available on our table at the Saturday Farmers’ Market on Railroad Ave. in Bellingham, early May through November.
At the same time, we will keep well in mind that while variety is the spice of life, dependable consistency is the bread and butter. We will always endeavor to provide our CSA shares a foundation of widely appreciated, often used crops (lettuce, peas, carrots, tomatoes (when in season), broccoli, sweet corn, spinach, for example) while providing a wee bit of weekly spice with such exotic yet delectable items as fennel root, golden beets, kohlrabi, baby bok choi, and other lesser known, but worthy selections. Each week, we’ll provide you with a newsletter featuring recipes, preparation and storage hints, and news of the farm to further enhance and support your experience with our farm.
We invite you to renew your CSA share with Cedarville Farm, or to sign up for the first time, if you have not been a shareholder previously. For a full description of our CSA program, go to our CSA page. If you are ready to sign up, you can use our printable CSA Order Form.
Thanks to all of you who have supported us through your
purchases as shareholders, farmers’ market customers, Coop
shoppers, or patrons of the restaurants we service. We are
honored, challenged, and delighted to grow good food for our
community.
